What is a CDL?

A Commercial Driver’s License, or CDL, is required to operate large and heavy vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, buses, and tankers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sets the standards for obtaining a CDL.

There are three types of CDLs:

Class A: Allows you to operate a combination of vehicles with a total weight of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the weight of the vehicle being towed is over 10,000 pounds.
Class B: Allows you to operate a single vehicle with a weight of 26,001 pounds or more, or a combination of vehicles with a total weight of less than 26,001 pounds.
Class C: Allows you to operate a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers or hazardous materials.

Swift Transportation CDL Training Program

The Swift Transportation CDL training program is a four-phase process that includes:

Orientation: This phase lasts for three days and includes paperwork, drug testing, and physical examinations.
Classroom Training: This phase lasts for four weeks and covers topics such as logbooks, trip planning, and cargo handling.
Range Training: This phase lasts for two weeks and includes hands-on training on a closed course to learn vehicle control, backing, and turning.
Over-The-Road Training: This phase lasts for four weeks and includes driving with a trainer to gain experience on the open road.

The entire training program lasts for 13 weeks, and it is free of charge for those who are accepted into the program. However, you will be required to sign a contract to work for Swift Transportation for a minimum of one year after completing the program.
